The National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C., has announced five sponsorships totaling $10 million in support of its grand opening in September.
Sponsorships of $2 million each from Bank of America, Kaiser Permanente, Prudential Financial, Target, and Toyota — all founding donors of the museum — will support inaugural events and celebrations surrounding the museum's grand opening on September 24. Kaiser Permanente and Target each awarded $5 million to the museum's capital campaign, while Prudential and Toyota gave $1 million each. In addition to donating $2 million to the campaign, Bank of America also will support the development and care of the museum's permanent collection.
"These corporations have been longstanding, essential partners in the campaign to build this museum," said Lonnie G. Bunch III, the museum's founding director. "Now, their support as sponsors will enable the museum to host a public celebration that reflects the historic significance of this event: the opening of the first national museum dedicated to the African American experience."
