People in the News (06/09/19): Appointments, Promotions, Obituaries

The W.K. Kellogg Foundation in Battle Creek, Michigan, has announced the selection of PAUL MARTINEZ as chief leadership and human capital strategist. In that role, Martinez will provide executive coaching, organizational development and capacity building and will work with the leadership team to support WKKF leadership fellows programs and alumni. As a member of the executive team, he will also lead development of the foundation’s strategic leadership grantmaking approach in partnership with grantees, communities, and other stakeholders in the United States, Mexico, Haiti, and internationally. During 2009-19, Dr. Martinez served as an executive coach with the Center for Creative Leadership (CCL), where he supported the growth and development of global executives in a number of open enrollment and custom programs. From 2016-18, he was a senior faculty member at the CCL, responsible for oversight, design, delivery, and maintaining high-quality standards of CCL’s premier apex program in the United States, Singapore, and Europe. Since 2008, he also has managed his own consulting firm, Dynamic Solutions USA, which works with individuals, teams, and organizations to define tactical and strategic organizational challenges and opportunities and design customized leadership and organizational development solutions.

The board of trustees of the J. Paul Getty Trust in Los Angeles has announced the election of DAVID L. LEE as its next chair. Lee, who was appointed to the Getty board in 2009, will serve a four-year term as chair of the fifteen-member group. A co-founder and managing general partner of Clarity Partners, a private equity firm that invests in communications, media, and related technology companies, Dr. Lee chairs the board of trustees at Caltech and the board of overseers at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California. He will succeed MARIA HUMMER-TUTTLE, whose tenure as chair began in 2015 and was marked by the second Pacific Standard Time initiative, highlighting Latino and Latin-American art.  Hummer-Tuttle also oversaw the growth of the annual Getty Medal Dinner and the expansion of the Getty’s development efforts with the establishment of the Patron Program and the J. Paul Getty Founder’s Society.

The board of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington, D.C., has announced the addition of five new trustees: CHANDRA KANT “C.K.” BIRLA, HENRI DE CASTRIES, NGOZI OKONJO-IWEALA, DEVEN PAREKH, and ZEID RA’AD AL HUSSEIN. Birla is chair of the CK Birla Group, a conglomerate operating in multiple industries, and currently chairs the board of governors of the Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra and is a member of the National Council of the Confederation of Indian Industry as well as Carnegie India’s Founders’ Committee. De Castries is a special advisor at General Atlantic and currently serves as vice-chair of the Board of Nestlé; as a director of HSBC, Europe’s largest bank; and as chairman of the Bilderberg Group, a gathering of North American and European political and private sector leaders. Until 2016, he was the chairman and CEO of the insurance and asset management company AXA. Okonjo-Iweala chairs the board of GAVI, The Vaccine Alliance and is chair of the African Risk Capacity. She is, in addition, a senior advisor at Lazard and serves on the boards of Twitter Inc., Standard Chartered Bank PLC, and Lumos. Parekh is a managing director at Insight Partners, a New York City-based global venture capital and private equity firm, and in 2019 was selected as a Top 100 Venture Capitalist by CB Insights. And Al Hussein recently stepped down as the United Nations high commissioner for Human Rights after four years in the position. A veteran diplomat, he previously served as Jordan’s permanent representative to the United Nations in New York, a post he held from September 2010 until July 2014 and from 2000 to 2007, and as the eighteenth ambassador of Jordan to the United States (2007-2010). 

The World Resources Institute (WRI) has announced the appointment of FANG LI as the new director of WRI China. An experienced leader with expertise in environmental economics. Dr. Fang previously worked in China’s Ministry of Ecology and Environment as deputy director general of the Foreign Economic Cooperation Office, where she led diverse multidisciplinary teams working on a range of environmental issues. Before that she served as assistant secretary general of the China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development (CCICED), a  think tank that brings together top Chinese and foreign experts and provides research and policy recommendations to the Chinese government.

In other new, The Nature Conservancy in Arlington, Virginia, has announced that MARK R. TERCEK plans to transition out of his role as CEO of the global conservation organization after an eleven-year tenure. Tercek joined TNC in 2008 and led the organization through the economic crisis of that year, successfully implementing an ambitious plan to strengthen its financial discipline as well as its strategic focus. During hiss tenure, the organization aligned around an ambitious global conservation agenda, introduced innovative new approaches to conservation finance, expanded into new geographies, launched a cities program, developed new science collaborations, and significantly elevated and expanded its work to address climate change. “The board of directors and I are extremely sorry that Mark plans to resign as CEO, but we fully support his personal decision to move on to the next phase of his career,” said Board Chair Tom Tierney. “Mark has been a tremendous champion for our mission, building on The Nature Conservancy’s strengths to help create a more innovative, global, and impactful organization. Thanks to his leadership and commitment, TNC will continue to accelerate and scale our important work addressing the planet’s biggest challenges. While we continue to execute on our global mission, we also recognize the importance of self-reflection and the need to continuously improve our culture. Doing so will be an important part of our leadership team’s focus going forward.”
