People in the News, 10/27/13: Appointments and Promotions

The Ford Foundation has announced the appointment of XAVIER DE SOUZA BRIGGS as vice president of its Economic Opportunity and Assets program. Briggs, currently associate professor of sociology and urban planning and associate head of the department of urban studies and planning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, is an expert on topics such as economic opportunity, democracy and governance, and urban racial and ethnic diversity. His appointment completes the foundation's senior program leadership team under new president DARREN WALKER.

The Helen Bader Foundation has named MARY OSMUNDSEN as program officer for its Community Partnerships for Youth program. Osmundsen, most recently program director at Artists Working in Education, has served as a volunteer on various creativity-related efforts in the Milwaukee area and managed community art projects in conjunction with Cardinal Stritch University and the Sixteenth Street Community Health Clinic. Earlier, she worked at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design.

The St. Baldrick's Foundation has announced PETER G. MAYBERRY as senior manager of legislative affairs, a new position. Mayberry, founder and president of government relations and management consulting firm Mayberry & Associates, managed legislative and regulatory responsibilities at Price Waterhouse (now PriceWaterhouseCoopers) and later worked at several law firms as a legislative and regulatory specialist on healthcare issues.

The Navy SEAL Foundation has announced the appointment of DAVID M. COOPER as president, reporting to CEO Robin King. Cooper, a retired U.S. Navy SEAL, has more than two decades' experience in military forces selection, training, education, and operations, and more than a decade of leadership experience on the battlefield and in the boardroom. He has been awarded numerous honors, including three Presidential Citations, a Silver Star, six Bronze Stars with Valor, and two Distinguished Meritorious Service medals.

The Melanoma Research Alliance has announced the appointments of CINDY HENSLEY McCAIN and ELLIOTT SIGAL to its board, effective November 4. McCain, wife of Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), is chair of her family's beer distribution company, Hensley & Company, and serves as co-chair of the Arizona governor's task force on human trafficking; she also serves on the boards of the nonprofit HALO Trust and Special Olympics Los Angeles 2015. Sigal, former executive vice president and director of Bristol-Myers Squibb, spent twelve years as part of the company's senior management team and has more than twenty-five years' experience in medicine, research, and management.

PATH has announced the appointment of ASHLEY BIRKETT as director of its Malaria Vaccine Initiative. Birkett, a five-year veteran of MVI, most recently was the program's deputy director, serving simultaneously as director of research and development. Previously, Birkett served as senior director of preclinical research at Acambis (now Sanofi Pasteur Biologics Co.), and earlier played a similar role at Apovia, Inc. He also led the Malaria Vaccine Program housed initially at Immune Complex Corporation and then at Apovia.

Donors Forum has announced the appointment of DOUG SCHENKELBER as vice president of public policy. Schenkelber, most recently director of advocacy and outreach at the Greater Chicago Food Depository, has held leadership positions at a variety of public policy institutions, including the Heartland Alliance for Human Needs and Human Rights and the Lawyers' Committee for Better Housing.

World Hope International has announced the appointment of ROBERT KAGBO as director of agriculture and LISA THOMPSON as director of anti-trafficking. Kagbo, most recently senior agricultural advisor for the USAID/West Africa Mission located in Accra, Ghana, earlier led the technical services division of TransAmerica Soil Blenders USA, was Ghana regional coordinator for the Africa Rice Center, and served as country director in Ethiopia for Africare. Thompson, most recently liaison for the abolition of sexual trafficking for the Salvation Army, earlier served as policy representative for the National Association of Evangelicals' Office for Governmental Affairs.

The Sabin Vaccine Institute has announced the election of MICHAEL H. POSNER to its board. Posner, professor of business and society at New York University's Stern School of Business, previously served as assistant secretary of state for the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor in the U.S. State Department and led nonprofit Human Rights First. Earlier, he was a lawyer with Sonnenschein, Nath & Rosenthal and lectured at Yale Law School and Columbia University Law School.

In other news, the Council on Foundations has announced staff appointments to its new network team, including PETER PANEPENTO, vice president; WILL HEATON, director of network development; TALIA RIVERA and KIM BLUITT, network managers (based in Massachusetts and California, respectively); and ANDREW HO, DARIA TEUTONICO, and LAURA TOMASKO, network developers (based at the organization's headquarters in Arlington, Virginia). The council also announced that its new Knowledge Center will be managed by CLAUDIA CONTRERAS and KIM ROQUE, assisted by PHILLIP BLACKMON and SUZANNE STRINGFIELD.
