The Charles Stewart Mott Foundation has announced the departures of PHIL PETERS and TERI CHAMBRY, and the promotions of MARY GAILBREATH, FRED KUMP, and JON'TISE LEWIS. Peters, the foundation's administrative group vice president, is retiring at the end of the month after fifteen years of service. Previously, he worked for Tiffany Industries as CFO, National Enterprises as vice president of finance, and Arthur Andersen. Gailbreath, who will succeed Peters as vice president-administration and secretary/treasurer, joined the foundation's staff in 2002 as grants manager and in 2010 became director of grants administration and assistant treasurer. Earlier, she worked as a manager at Arthur Andersen in Ann Arbor and at a real estate development company. Kump, who has been named interim director of grants administration, taking over from Gailbreath in that capacity, joined the foundation in 2000 as a program/grants administration specialist, was promoted to program officer in 2006, and in 2010 assumed additional duties as a grants financial analyst. Earlier, he worked for the Flint Department of Community and Economic Development and was a founding partner of consultancy Economic Development Associates. Chambry is retiring after thirty-eight years of service as an executive secretary. A Flint native, she is one of the few current staff members at the foundation to have met Charles Stewart Mott: as an elementary school student and participant of the Stepping Stones Club — a foundation grantee for many years — she shook hands with Mr. Mott at a holiday reception. "I thanked him for funding the Stepping Stones," she said. "He seemed pleased. It never occurred to me that, someday, I'd be working for his foundation." Lewis, who joined Mott's communications department as an administrative assistant in 2013, will take over for Chambry as the department’s administrative secretary. Earlier, she was an administrative assistant for Bergaflex North America in Holly, Michigan.
The McKnight Foundation has announced the appointments of JODY SPEER as director of information technology, JEFF HENEBURY as program assistant for Education & Learning and Midwest Climate & Energy, and RITA LEE as meeting, event, and administrative assistant. Speer has over twenty-seven years of experience in security, governance, risk management, compliance strategy, IT operations, and software and systems development and has provided information security and risk management in a variety of contexts, including accountancy firm CliftonLarsonAllen, the government of Hennepin County, Bluestem Brands, and business technology company Forward Hindsight. Henebury most recently worked as a senior administrative and merchandising specialist for Target and in multiple positions at the Walker Art Center. He also has experience at several regional book publishing companies, including McKnight grantees Graywolf Press and Coffee House Press. Lee worked previously as an administrative and marketing assistant at Henson & Efron, P.A., in Minneapolis, and as an office aide in the DeWitt Wallace Library at Macalester College in St. Paul.
The Markle Foundation has announced the appointments of ROBERT KHEDOURI as managing director and chief operating officer and WAN-LAE CHENG as senior director. Khedouri, most recently co-founding director of financial information services company PeerIQ, previously was co-founder and co-CEO of startup MusicGremlin. He also held senior executive positions at SanDisk, was a corporate attorney with Cravath, Swaine & Moore, and did consulting work at McKinsey & Company. Cheng, most recently associate principal at McKinsey & Company, earlier worked for public policy firm MDRC, where she led site selection, pilot design, and data collection for federal studies on employment retention and advancement for the U.S. Departments of Labor and Health and Human Services.
The Spencer Foundation has announced the planned departure of its president, MICHAEL S. McPHERSON, in August. McPherson, who has served as the foundation's president since 2003, was interviewed by PND last June about the present and future of public education in the United States. "Throughout my time at Spencer, I have been blessed with great colleagues, a terrific board, and an important mission I believe in deeply," McPherson noted. "Spencer is distinctive in its commitment to rigorous and open-minded research as a vital path to lasting improvement in education. It has truly been a privilege to serve the cause of education by leading the foundation along this path."
The Public Welfare Foundation has announced the planned departure of criminal justice program officer SEEMA GAJWANI. Gajwani, who joined the foundation in 2007, has led its efforts since 2011 to reduce over-incarceration of adults in the U.S., with the specific goal of reducing racial disparities. Previously, she worked for the Public Defender Service of Washington, DC, representing juvenile and adult defendants at trial, and helped train investigators, new attorneys, and students from DC-area law schools in criminal trial practice. She will be joining the DC attorney general's office as special counsel for juvenile justice reform.
CARE USA has appointed MICHELLE NUNN as president and CEO, AJC.com reports. Nunn, a former candidate for the United States Senate and the daughter of former Sen. Sam Nunn (D-GA), previously headed up the Atlanta-based Points of Light Foundation and will succeed HELENE GAYLE, who is stepping down after nearly a decade at the helm of the seventy-year-old relief agency.
The Tom Coughlin Jay Fund has announced the appointment of LYNN CHWATSKY as managing director of its New York/New Jersey operations, responsible for program management, partnerships, and fund development. Chwatsky, who has volunteered at the fund for several years, earlier served as vice president of community outreach at Sesame Street.
In other news, Foundation Center — PND's parent organization — has announced the election of EARL LEWIS, GAIL CHRISTOPHER, and ANA MARIE ARGILAGOS to its board. Lewis, president of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, is a respected scholar in American and African American history. Before joining the foundation in 2013, Lewis held faculty appointments at the University of California, Berkeley; the University of Michigan; and Emory University. Christopher, vice president for policy and senior advisor for the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, is a recognized leader in the field of health policy and earlier served as vice president of the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies, where she led the Health Policy Institute, a multiyear initiative to engage underserved, racial, and ethnic minorities in health policy discussions. She has also launched, led, and managed three public commissions, including the landmark Dellums Commission, which investigated conditions faced by young men of color. Dr. Christopher was recently honored with Grantmakers in Health's Terrance Keenan Leadership Award in Health Philanthropy. Argilagos, a senior advisor at the Ford Foundation, is also a professor of international urban planning at New York University's Wagner Graduate School of Public Service. She served previously as deputy chief of staff at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, where she created the Office for International and Philanthropic Innovation and was its first deputy assistant secretary.
