People in the News (9/17/17): Appointments, Promotions, Obituaries

The Ford Foundation has announced the appointment of disability and civil rights advocate JUDITH E. HEUMANN as a senior fellow. In her new role, Heumann, a social justice leader since the early 1970s, when she sued the New York City Board of Education and became the school system's first teacher in a wheelchair, will focus on advancing the inclusion of people with disabilities in traditional and new media platforms and fostering greater collaboration among civil rights movements. Her work has included serving as the first special advisor for international disability rights at the State Department during the Obama administration and as the World Bank's first advisor on disability and development.

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has announced that JOHNNETTA BETSCH COLE, former president of Spelman College and Bennett College and recently retired director of the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art, has been named a senior consulting fellow. Cole will advise executive vice president Mariët Westermann and others on key initiatives and activities, especially those focused on diversity, accessibility, equity, and inclusion in art museums and relevant academic disciplines. In addition, WILLIAM D. ADAMS, former chair of the National Endowment for the Humanities, and MICHAEL MCPHERSON, president emeritus of the Spencer Foundation, have joined the foundation as senior fellows. And DIANNE S. HARRIS, dean for the College of Humanities and a history professor at the University of Utah, has been appointed senior program officer in the foundation's Higher Education and Scholarship in the Humanities program, effective November 1.

The Heinz Endowments has announced the appointment of MAC HOWISON as program officer for creative learning, a newly created position focused on grantee initiatives that intersect with the endowments' Creativity and Learning program areas. Howison, who most recently served as senior program officer for catalytic funding at the Sprout Fund, will develop and implement a range of cross-sectional grantmaking activity related to arts education and creativity in public education and out-of-school settings.

The Eugene and Agnes E. Meyer Foundation in Washington, D.C., has announced the election of DAVID HARRINGTON and TRAM NGUYEN to its board. Currently president and CEO of the Prince George's County Chamber of Commerce, Harrington previously has served as a Maryland state senator; mayor of Bladensburg, Maryland; and a member of the Prince George's County Council. A longtime community organizer and workers' rights advocate, Nguyen is co-executive director of New Virginia Majority.

Bader Philanthropies in Milwaukee has announced the promotion of FRANK CUMBERBATCH to the newly created position of vice president for engagement — in which he will be the architect and steward of the foundation's engagement strategy, working with stakeholders from the grassroots to local civic and philanthropic leaders. Prior to joining the foundation in 2016 as a project manager, Cumberbatch was program manager with Acts Housing, working to turn vacant foreclosed properties into homes for low-income families.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has announced the election of MICHAEL BYUNGJU KIM, founder and chair of private equity firm MBK Partners, to its board of trustees. A former president of Carlyle Asia Partners, Kim is a collector of modern and contemporary art and, with his wife, has provided leadership support for the Met Breuer and the museum's Modern and Contemporary Art initiatives.

The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington, D.C., has announced that CHRISTOPHER SMART will join its new Geoeconomics and Strategy Program as a senior fellow. Currently a senior fellow at Harvard Kennedy School's Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government and the Whitehead senior fellow at Chatham House, Smart served in the Obama administration as special assistant to the president for international economics, trade, and investment and as deputy assistant secretary for Europe and Eurasia at the Treasury Department.

The Silicon Valley Education Foundation has announced that MUHAMMED CHAUDHRY has resigned after sixteen years as the organization's founding president and CEO, effective September 11. MANNY BARBARA, vice president for advocacy and thought leadership, has been named interim CEO.

The Shed, a new arts center located in the Hudson Yards area on Manhattan's Far West Side, has announced the appointment of MARGARET POMEROY HUNT as chief development officer. Hunt, who began her career at New York City Ballet and Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation, was interim chief development officer at Susan G. Komen for the Cure and most recently served as senior vice president and chief revenue officer at New York Public Radio.

The National Constitution Center has announced that VIRGINIA CLARK has joined the organization as vice president for external relations. Clark previously served as assistant secretary for advancement at the Smithsonian Institution and as vice president for development and alumni relations at the University of Pennsylvania.
