UW Business School Receives $4.5 Million From Former Starbucks Exec

The University of Washington Business School has announced a $4.5 million gift from former Starbucks president and CEO Orin Smith to help fund new facilities on its Seattle campus.

The gift from Smith, a 1965 graduate of the business school, will enable the school to increase its total building space by more than 30 percent, including new interactive lecture halls, wireless classrooms, computer labs, and offices for faculty and staff. "This has always been a very good business school," said Smith, "but it can't become a truly great school unless it has the right facilities to deliver the kind of business education needed in the twenty-first century."

"We are very grateful to Orin Smith for this wonderfully generous gift," added UW president Mark A. Emmert. "Orin is an exceptional business leader and one of the most distinguished graduates of our university....Students and faculty will benefit from his generosity for years to come."
