Made in honor of late longtime board president Ruth Carter Stevenson (1923–2013), the largest gift in the museum's history will establish an endowment to support future exhibition and education initiatives. The funds will support exhibitions that foster new scholarship, are innovative, or complement themes and artists in the museum's permanent collection, as well as enhanced education programs for students and teachers.
Alice Walton, a Walton Family Foundation board member and board chair of the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, served on the Amon Carter board from 2004 to 2015. "Mother and Alice were great friends and shared an extraordinary love and knowledge of art — visionaries both," said Karen Hixon, Stevenson's daughter and the museum's current board president. "Alice has been an important part of the Amon Carter and its board for many years. I am thankful for all she has taught me, and words cannot express my gratitude for this gift from the Walton Family Foundation in Mother's honor."
