Washington University in St. Louis has announced a gift of $8 million from Mike and Tana Powell to match gifts for endowed professorships in chemistry and other disciplines.
The gift, which was made to the university's current fundraising campaign, will provide support for Driving Discovery, a multi-phase project that aims to transform the university's school of Arts and Sciences. The Powells, whose daughter graduated from WU this spring, previously served as co-chairs of the university's Parents Annual Fund and Parents Council. Mike Powell, who was elected to the university’s board of trustees in 2014, is managing general partner of Sofinnova Ventures, a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical venture capital firm. Tana Powell is a graphic designer and artist and has served as art director for the Oakland Tribune and design director for San Diego City Magazine.
"The Powells' visionary support for new professorships in chemistry and related fields holds extraordinary potential for future impact in science and technology," said Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton. "We are profoundly grateful to the Powells for their generous commitment....Their leadership and vision ensure future discoveries that will benefit our nation and our world."
