Wonderschool, a San Francisco-based network of in-home daycare and preschool providers, has announced commitments totaling $2.1 million from five organizations to expand its programming into New York City.
The investments from Omidyar Network, Be Curious Partners, Rethink Education, Edelweiss Partners, and Learn Capital will enable the San Francisco-based startup to increase its presence in the city, where it hopes to open a hundred and fifty programs by year-end. The funding also will be used to expand the network’s offerings in the Bay Area and Los Angeles.
Wonderschool works to address low compensation rates in early childcare education that price out caregivers and educators from the neighborhoods they serve and cause many to quit the field. In addition to its programs, the network provides providers with support services, help with licensing and liability insurance, meeting health and safety standards, and creating a daily routine for kids.
"Wonderschool is responding with better quality and more flexible solutions to meet the needs of early learners, their parents, and childcare providers," said Omidyar Network U.S. education lead Isabelle Hau. "By using Wonderschool’s technology platform, early learning educators get to focus on what they are best at, which is caring for and teaching young children."
