Mission: To address the educational challenges of the twenty-first century by providing research-based arts programs that create socially just learning environments.
About the organization: Founded through a collaboration between the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, the New York City Youth Bureau, and the New York City Board of Education in the aftermath of the city's fiscal crisis in the late seventies, ArtsConnection provides innovative arts programming designed to enhance New York City public school students' intellectual, personal, and social growth. Evaluations have shown that, in addition to technical and expressive skills, students participating in ArtsConnection programs develop greater self-confidence, motivation, and ability to take positive risks; communication and collaboration skills; and problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
Current programs: In addition to providing more than a hundred and twenty pre-K-12 schools citywide with customized in-school programming in dance, music, theater, and the visual arts, the organization offers Developing English Language Literacy Through the Arts, a program for multilingual students from third- to eighth-grade; out-of-school programs for teens, including free and reduced-priced tickets to performances and cultural venues through its High5 Tickets program; professional development opportunities for classroom teachers, arts specialists, and teaching artists; and online resources for educators and practitioners.
Funding: ArtsConnection is supported by individuals, foundations, corporations, and New York City public agencies.
