Mission: To use innovative tools and practices, formulate better insights, and achieve better outcomes for children and families.
About the organization: FamilyForward was created from a 2017 merger between the St. Louis-based Children's Home Society of Missouri and Family Resource Center with the aim of providing innovative solutions that advance safer, healthier relationships for children and families. To that end, the organization offers comprehensive services based on the Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics (NMT), a trauma-informed, developmentally sensitive approach to understanding the impact of a child's history on his or her outcomes.
Current programs: The organization services for children and families include trauma assessment and psychological evaluation, with individualized recommendations and therapeutic interventions supporting children at home and in school; individual, family, group, and trauma-focused counseling; classes and mentoring for parents and caregivers, programs for teens, advocacy and financial sustainability services for women (many of whom have been impacted by domestic violence), trauma training for professionals, comprehensive community supports and services; foster care case management, recruitment, training, and licensing; a therapeutic preschool; and care for children with developmental disabilities.
COVID-19 response: In response to the public health emergency, FamilyForward has transitioned many of its programs for the vulnerable populations it serves to a telehealth platform. The organization also has set up a COVID-19 Emergency Fund to support the purchase of items such as laptops for children who are attending school remotely, bridge paycheck gaps for caregivers who have been furloughed, and to provide assistance to those who are struggling.
Website: Visitors to the FamilyForward website can learn more about the organization's services, browse past issues of its newsletters, and get involved by volunteering, donating clothing or items on the FamilyForward wish list, and/or make a donation to the COVID-19 Emergency Fund.
Funding: FamilyForward is supported by individuals, foundations, corporations, and program service fees.
