GoPhilanthropic Foundation

GoPhilanthropic Foundation
Founded: 2011

Mission: To bolster power and potential at the grassroots, where underresourced communities around the globe are working to gain equal access to education, health, human rights, and the opportunities all people are entitled to.

About the Organization: The GoPhilanthropic Foundation was established in 2011 by Lydia Dean, founder of GoPhilanthropic Travel — a social enterprise that sells customized philanthropic trips on which participants engage with and support select grassroots community-based programs — and a group of women, most of them GoPhil Travel participants. A grantmaking public charity, the foundation believes that those closest to the problems understand the issues more deeply; that people and communities are strongest when they "do for themselves"; and that "listening and learning" is more effective than "serving and solving."

Current Programs: The GoPhilanthropic Foundation partners with small, grassroots, community-based and -led organizations working to ensure equitable access to educationhealth care, and human rights in Cambodia, Guatemala, India, Kenya, Laos, Nepal, and Vietnam. Informed by an "identify, invest, strengthen" model, the organization couples cash grants with capacity-building assistance in areas such as strategic planning, budgeting, reporting, communications, and evaluation to help grassroots NGOs scale their efforts.

For donors, the foundation provides a platform for global learning, engagement, and "active philanthropy"; hosts memorial funds; and partners with family foundations to vet projects, manage their international giving, and monitor the progress of their investments. GoPhil Travel offers an ethical, responsible approach to funding partner NGOs as well as an opportunity to learn first-hand about critical development issues.

COVID-19 Response: In response to the pandemic, the foundation has established a Rapid Response Fund to help meet the emergency needs of its partner organizations and communities, including the purchase of medicines and medical supplies, the provision of meals to vulnerable children and families, and the delivery of safety equipment for program staff working in the field.

Website: Visitors to the GoPhilanthropic Foundation site can learn more about the organization's approach, search partner NGOs by focus area or geography, read about past partnerships, learn how to get involved ("learn it, live it, share it"), and/or make a donation to the Rapid Response Fund.

Funding: The GoPhilanthropic Foundation is supported by individuals and foundations.
