Mission: To stand with people in their pursuit of better lives.
About the Organization: Established in 2007, Mission St. Louis takes a multi-pronged approach to the challenge of persistent poverty in St. Louis. According to the organization, 40 percent of all children in the city are born into poverty, impacting their day-to-day reality and shaping their lives in significant ways. The organization works to transform the future prospects of poor St. Louisans by improving their access to quality education and health care, economic opportunity, and financial security.
Current Programs: The organization's programs are designed to address critical stages in the cycle of poverty. The organization's education program, Beyond School, provides academic supports, social/emotional learning, and enrichment and experiential learning opportunities to youth starting in third grade to ensure that they stay on track to graduate from high school on time. In partnership with area businesses, the employment program, Beyond Jobs, assists students with their resumes, helps them connect with potential employers and secure internships, and provides coaching in the areas of anger management, healthy parenting, and financial basics. And the Beyond Charity program works with local nonprofits to recruit volunteers who can assist community members with home repairs, tax preparation, and other needs.
COVID-19 Response: The organization's response to the pandemic has included a Community Response Fund, a guide to COVID-19 resources, the collection and distribution of cleaning and school supplies, and volunteer mentoring outreach to students. Contributions to the Response Fund are distributed directly to Mission St. Louis program participants to help them pay rent, buy food, and/or meet other basic needs.
