The Richard H. Driehaus Foundation partners with the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation to provide general operating grants to arts and cultural organizations in Chicago with annual operating budgets of up to $500,000.
The program, the MacArthur Funds for Culture, Equity, and the Arts at the Richard H. Driehaus Foundation (“MacArthur-Driehaus Funds”), provides general operating support grants to small to midsize arts organizations in Chicago with proven records of artistic and organizational excellence. Grants are administered according to the following criteria: quality of the organization’s artistic program; strong financial management and evidence of good planning; strength of the board and staff leadership; impact on the organization’s neighborhood and the city; and sizes and types of audiences served. Grant amounts range from $3,000 to $20,000 and typically do not exceed 10 percent of an organization’s total actual expenses in the prior year.
The MacArthur-Driehaus Funds are designed specifically to address the needs of small to midsize professional arts and cultural organizations. The goal of the Funds is to encourage and advance the richness and variety — aesthetic, stylistic, thematic, geographical, and cultural — extant in Chicago’s vibrant and diverse arts community. To that end, the program is limited to companies that emphasize professional presentation over arts education or community outreach.
Arts and culture organizations eligible to receive these general operating support grants include but are not limited to organizations working in the performing arts (e.g., dance, theater, puppetry, and music in its many forms); non-performing-arts organizations, such as museums, archives, literary publications, and film.
To be eligible, applicants must be tax exempt from federal income tax under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and classified as public charities under Section 509(a)(1) or 509(a)(2). Organizations must be in good standing with the Internal Revenue Service and theIllinois Secretary of Stateat the time of submission to be considered.
Organizations with expenses above $500,000 (excluding in-kind support) in the most recently completed fiscal year should refer to the MacArthur Fund for Arts and Culture at Prince Charitable Trusts.
There are two deadlines, each with a different budget threshold: January 15, 2020 for arts and culture organizations, regardless of discipline, with actual expenses of under $150,000 (excluding in-kind support) in the most recently completed fiscal year; and May 1, 2020, for arts and culture organizations, regardless of discipline, with actual expenses between $150,000 and $500,000 (excluding in-kind support) in the most recently completed fiscal year.
