Dance/NYC Accepting Applications for Coronavirus Dance Relief Fund

Dance/NYC invites freelance dance workers and dance-making organizations in the New York City metro area to submit applications for awards through its Coronavirus Dance Relief Fund. Made possible by the generous support of the Howard Gilman Foundation, the Mertz Gilmore Foundation, the Ford Foundation, and the Harkness Foundation for Dance, the purpose of the initiative is to mitigate the growing impact of the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak on individual freelance dance workers and dance-making organizations in the New York City area, with a focus on financial losses incurred due to the spread of the virus and social restriction measures implemented to contain the spread of the virus.

Freelance dance workers are eligible to apply for monthly awards of $500, with a maximum of $1,500 for the March to May period, if they are an individual dance dancer, dance performer, choreographer, dance photographer, dance videographer, teaching artist, or related personnel such as a technician (lighting, stage management, production, etc.), independent presenter, producer, agent and/or manager, or theater personnel (usher, in-house vendor, etc.); are based in the New York City metro area (including the five boroughs of New York City, as well as Nassau, Rockland, Suffolk, and Westchester counties in New York State, and Bergen and Hudson counties in New Jersey); and are able to provide a tax ID, EIN number, or Social Security number, as well as a bank account number and routing number. Applicants must submit an application for each month. Applications for March funds are open. Applications for April funds will open on Friday, April 10, and applications for May funds will open on Friday, May 8. Applicants may submit an application for any month and will be able to carry over information from one application to the next, as needed.

Dance making organizations with annual operating budgets between $25,000 and $500,000 are eligible for one-time grants of $2,500 to $5,000. Grant amounts for dance making organizations will be determined based on the proportion of the grantee’s loss of income or incurred expenses due to the COVID-19 coronavirus, in relation to their annual budget.

Organizations are eligible to apply if they are a dance making organization and/or  fiscally sponsored group focused primarily on the creation and/or performance of dance; are headquartered in the New York City metro area, including the five boroughs of New York City, as well as Nassau, Rockland, Suffolk, and Westchester counties in New York State, and Bergen and Hudson counties in New Jersey; have an annual expense budget between $25,000 and $500,000 for FY2020; and can provide proof of 501(c)(3) status or fiscal sponsorship status.

The fund will prioritize supporting communities most impacted by COVID-19, including African, Latina/o/x, Asian, Arab, and Native American (ALAANA), disabled, immigrant, and women-identifying artists, as well as those at high risk, including elderly and immuno-suppressed artists. Direct recipients of Howard Gilman Foundation, Mertz Gilmore Foundation, Ford Foundation, and/or Harkness Foundation for Dance grants and individuals and organizations who have not previously been funded by Dance/NYC are encouraged to apply.
